ERICA HARRISS STATEMENT ON CLOSURE OF GRANITE CITY STEEL
STATE SENATE CANDIDATE ERICA HARRISS STATEMENT ON CLOSURE OF GRANITE CITY STEEL
Condemns Biden Trade Policy and Pledges to Fight for Workers in Springfield
I just received the news yesterday that after more than one hundred years of operation, the Granite City Steel Works operated by US Steel is in talks to permanently end production of steel, potentially costing 1000 union workers their jobs over the next two years. This comes after Joe Biden had lifted some of President Trump’s steel tariffs and just days after the Biden administration announced that it was planning to eliminate tariffs on other Chinese imports.
My grandfather retired after a lifelong career from Granite City Steel as an industrial engineer. The mill also employed my dad and my uncles early in their careers. This is a deeply personal issue and my thoughts are with the workers and their families who will lose their livelihoods because of this tragic outcome. This is a disaster for the people and the economy of the Metro East and blame for it lies solely at the feet of Democrats who have utterly failed to protect our workers, their jobs, and the steel industry which has been the backbone of American Industrial power for generations. The Democratic supermajority in Springfield will work hand-in-hand with Biden and his catastrophic trade policies. Our elected officials are there to protect and defend American jobs, not jobs in China.
I want the people of Granite City and the workers at Granite City Steel to know that I will stand with them, I will fight with them, and I will demand an end to the liberal policies of Joe Biden and JB Pritzker that have betrayed our families, caused lasting damage to the local economy, and sold the precious fruit of their labor overseas. This is deeply sad news, but I know that the people of Metro East are strong and deeply industrious. You will overcome this challenge and I will do everything in my power as State Senator for the 56th District to support you.
